Designer Spotlight

Sarah Ivory

We sat down with interior designer Sarah Ivory, who recently styled Joe Jonas’ record room with a Wrensilva console, to explore her approach to designing elevated, deeply personal spaces.

With her refined eye and layered aesthetic, Sarah has brought her style to projects ranging from celebrity homes to thoughtfully designed commercial spaces. Read more about her design philosophy and creative process below.

How do you want people to feel when they walk into one of your finished spaces?

“I want people to get a sense of the client’s lifestyle when they walk into a finished space. When you visit a person’s home you essentially get the most intimate glimpse of everything they represent…You need to consider all the senses including how the room looks, feels, how it smells like, how the room looks and feels, how it smells, and even what kinds of sounds you can hear.”

How do you balance aesthetics with functionality when curating a room?

“Balancing aesthetics with functionality is the key to a successful design. My client, Joe Jonas, is a musician who isn’t afraid of color or pushing boundaries in design. When designing his record room, we imagined it like a speakeasy one might discover behind a tavern in Red Hook, Brooklyn. This particular room was curved with all around glass and a column interrupting the widest side of the room. We used the Wrensilva to anchor the space by placing it along the longest wall and built a custom bar out of the column. While the sounds emanating from the Wrensilva set the tone for the rest of the room, Joe wanted to make sure guests didn’t miss out on the incredible views, so we selected cushy sheepskin covered bar seating that swiveled. Overall the result is an electric oasis in the sky where you can pour yourself a nice drink.”

What aspects of the Wrensilva design do you find most inspiring?

I love the clean lines of the Wrensilva - they’re like a nod to the sound quality you can expect; crisp, clear, clean.

What records do you love to play most on a Wrensilva and why?

My favorite kind of records to play on a Wrensilva are old jazz records by Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, and Miles Davis. I love the in-between song sounds; the tiny clicks. They sound like a portal into another time. For a modern sound, I recommend Music For People Who Believe in Love by Joe Jonas. It's a really intimate record.

If your design style had a soundtrack, what would it sound like?

If my design had a soundtrack it would be Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful”  because it speaks to the fleeting nature of beauty, and my desire as an artist to design something that stands the test of time.
