Wrensilva consoles are hand-made entirely in our San Diego workshop, where each piece of wood we use is hand-selected. We source our lumber with intention, seeking not only beauty, but character, texture, and stability that will allow each console to feel cohesive, enduring, and deeply connected to the natural material it came from.

Sourcing with intention
At Wrensilva, the wood selection process begins long before a console takes shape. Each piece is hand-selected with quality as the guiding principle–chosen not in bulk, but with intention. Every board is procured with a specific purpose in mind, allowing for greater precision in design and minimizing unnecessary waste. This meticulous approach filters out imperfections at the source, ensuring that only the finest cuts become part of a Wrensilva console.
Ultimately, we go to great lengths to source premium-grade hardwood material from our suppliers. We are looking first and foremost for the premium representation of that wood varietal. Our vendors understand that we have very high standards and work with us to source specific qualities from reputable mills.
Distinct by Nature
Our Walnut lumber is sourced from the American Midwest, where the cool climate creates a deeper, more consistently rich heartwood. The seasonal temperature changes in this area also cause natural color changes marked by distinct growth rings. After harvesting, American walnut tends to lighten in color, moving from a deep chocolate brown toward a lighter, richer patina.
The white oak is sourced from historic mills across Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan, where cold northern climates slow the tree’s growth and produce tighter grain with a more uniform, lighter tone. The region’s shorter growing seasons and varied terrain create subtle shifts in texture and density within each board, giving the material its quiet depth and character. Over time, white oak develops a warmer patina, softening its pale beige tones while retaining the clarity of its grain.
Beyond the Grain
When we look at wood, we search for something special, a unique characteristic that sets it apart, what it does when it catches the light (the chatoyance of the wood), how it feels to the hand, how it will lend itself to our standards of construction integrity, and what the wood story itself evokes in me and hopefully the customer.
Next, we look at characteristics within the wood that form relationships, connecting each part of the console. At the heart of our craftsmanship is a belief in preserving and celebrating the inherent beauty of the wood. The wood takes on a holistic quality, creating a seamless, balanced wood mosaic primarily through grain, color, and texture. It should look natural for each separate piece to flow organically into the next. If we’ve done our job correctly, it should be difficult to see where one piece begins and another ends.
